- Entry barrier — qualifications that are genuinely hard to obtain (CA, actuarial science, top-tier law, medicine) tend to hold their value because supply stays limited
- Proof of skill — in every stream, students who can demonstrate ability through projects, internships or a portfolio outperform students holding only a marksheet
A motivated Humanities student heading into law will out-earn an unmotivated engineering student, and the reverse is equally true. The stream is the starting point, not the outcome.
How do you choose between so many options?
Narrow the field with four questions, in this order:
1. What does the student actually enjoy doing for hours? Not what they say they like, but where their time goes voluntarily. This is the single best predictor of sustained effort.
2. What can the family invest, and over what period? CA and actuarial science cost relatively little but demand years of exams. Private engineering and design degrees cost lakhs but complete predictably. Both models work; the wrong one for your circumstances does not.
3. What is the entrance timeline? This is the question that quietly eliminates options. CLAT and design entrances reward preparation started in Class 11. Deciding in March of Class 12 that law looks interesting means a drop year or a weaker institution.
4. What does the work actually look like at 30? Students choose careers based on how they look at 22 — the degree, the campus, the starting salary. It is worth asking what a typical day looks like a decade in, because that is where most of the career is spent.
What if you cannot decide before results?
Do these three things while waiting:
- Register for the entrances you might plausibly want. Registration is cheap; a missed deadline is not. Keeping CUET, CLAT or a design entrance alive costs little and preserves optionality.
- Take an aptitude assessment. Two or three days of structured assessment and counselling narrows a list of twenty options to three or four with reasoning behind it.
- Talk to three people doing the work you are considering. Ask what they wish they had known at 17.
What if you do not get your first-choice course?

The option worth avoiding: enrolling in a course you have no interest in, at an institution you have not researched, because admission season created urgency. Four years is a long time to spend on a decision made in a panicked fortnight.
